'Heckuva Thing!' Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson's Completions vs. Cleveland Browns
The Baltimore Ravens moved to 3-1 on the season after a 28-3 beatdown of the Cleveland Browns as Lamar Jackson produced a superb performance that also puts Baltimore 2-0 in the division.
Coming into the game, the much-vaunted Browns defense that was ranked No. 1 in the NFL for points allowed, many thought that Jackson and Todd Monken's offense would struggle.
Well, Jackson completed 15 of his 19 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for two touchdowns as well. For Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, what his quarterback did against that level of defense was something special.
“Well, I think having completions like that against this defense [Browns] is a heck of a thing,” Harbaugh said. “Because they’re not a defense that’s going to give up a high completion percentage generally at all. They’re more of a defense where you got to try to make the completions count, which Lamar [Jackson] also did along with the receivers, Mark [Andrews], Zay [Flowers], and different plays that were made that were chunk plays that you really have to get against the style of defense and the talent that the Browns have."
While some might point to Cleveland not having Deshaun Watson under center as a reason why Baltimore managed such a resounding win, Jackson and the offense still had to go against what has been one of the best defenses this season.
It is early on in the Monken era offensively, but one of the biggest and most noticeable changes is how efficient Jackson is with the football. It is only four games in, but Lamar has a completion percentage of 74.3, and that bodes well for how the offense runs going forward.
Now, Lamar won't have the 15 of 19 games all too often, but for Harbaugh, Jackson's accuracy as a quarterback has never been an issue inside the building.
“Lamar’s an accurate quarterback,” Harbaugh said. “He always has been to my eyes. I’ll just take one throw to Mark [Andrews] for the touchdown in the corner of the endzone. That’s as good of a throw as you’re ever going to see in a football game from a quarterback. His completion percentage speaks for itself, speaks to all the guys. We’ve always believed in his ability to throw the ball and he’s determined to be the best he can be.”
The Ravens now sit comfortably atop the AFC North and face yet another road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers as they look to make it a clean sweep in the first round of division games.
Baltimore's offense has been up and down through the first month, but we are starting to see flashes of what many thought could be the most explosive offense in football.
If Jackson can remain efficient as a passer, then the Ravens could make some serious noise this season.
