Saints vs. Chargers Predictions for NFL Preseason Week 2 on Sunday, 8/20
We’ll get into our official Saints vs. Chargers prediction soon, but first, what happened in each of these teams’ Week 1 games? Both squads secured victories but in much different fashions. New Orleans edged the Kansas City Chiefs by just two points, while Los Angeles defeated their crosstown-rival Los Angeles Rams by a score of 34-17.
The story of these games, on both sides, was the offensive production that was put on display. Quarterback Derek Carr got some run with the Saints, but even his backups in Jameis Winston and Jake Haener produced excellent results, combining for 21/30 for 197 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
For the Chargers, their franchise signal caller in Justin Herbert didn’t play, but much like with the Saints, his backups came in and delivered. Easton Stick and Max Duggan combined for stats of 16/24 for 128 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. They also added 32 yards on the ground between the two of them. Elsewhere, running back Elijah Dotson was a force to be reckoned with, gaining 92 yards on six carries to the tune of two touchdowns.
While the defenses could have definitely looked a lot worse, it was the offense of the Saints and Chargers that led them to victories in Week 1. We aren’t too confident in deciding on a pick regarding the spread or money line, so instead, our Saints vs. Chargers predictions will be zeroed in on the point total.
Saints vs. Chargers Picks & NFL Best Bets
We just mentioned how these two defenses weren’t terrible in Week 1, but they weren't exactly stellar, either. They limited the Chiefs and Rams to a combined 41 points, but still allowed a decent amount of yardage. Kansas City actually outgained New Orleans 346-334, and the Rams’ Stetson Bennett had a solid showing against this Chargers secondary (17/29, 191 yards, one touchdown).
Between the leaky defenses and both squads’ impressive display of offense last week, we anticipate a high-scoring affair that could come down to the wire. This matchup truly is a coin flip, which is why we’re staying away from anything that has to do regarding the winner of the game. At the end of the day, the best bet from our Saints vs. Chargers predictions is on the over 37.5 (-110) at PointsBet Sportsbook.
