We got our first look at the Saints on Saturday afternoon, as the team's three-day Rookie Minicamp is ongoing through Sunday at the team's facility in Metairie. Some 24 players are also trying out with the team in addition to some familiar faces like Lucas Krull, Vincent Gray, Kawaan Baker, and Prince Emili were participating. Here's a few takeaways from the brief viewing window the media had.

Rookie Minicamp Takeaways

  • Central Michigan TE Joel Wilson did not pass his physical and ended up not signing with the Saints.
  • Joe Woods is going to be a fascinating coach to watch. He was working with defensive backs along with Marcus Robertson and Sterling Moore. You can see that he's a strong teacher of the game.
  • Kendre Miller is not participating in drills, something he told us that was going to happen during his post-draft interview. However, he was out on the field running with a trainer and heavily involved with a play sheet in hand. Dennis Allen said after practice that he's not expected to miss any training camp.
  • Jake Haener made a strong first impression. He was quick on his feet and had a good snap on his passes. He looked comfortable in his decision-making, and hit several receivers on the route tree.
  • A.T. Perry also made a good first impression. He overcame some minor things early, but ended up making some nice catches over the middle and deep, including one where he went to the ground to get the ball.
  • Other players who stood out in the short portion we got to see was Malik Flowers and Shaquan Davis.
  • Dennis Allen said after practice that Michael Thomas had some hardware removed from his foot about a week and a half ago. He continues to put in work for the rehab process.
  • On the Foster Moreau signing, Allen said he has a lot of the qualities that they like in a player. The Saints are happy to have him in the building and joining the team, and as previously reported, he's expected to be on the field next week. Allen said that all of the medical information they've gathered has been very promising.
  • Nick Saldiveri said that he's been primarily working at right guard so far. He's a versatile lineman who can play at multiple positions.

We'll get a further look at the Saints when OTAs roll around in just over a week.
