The Saints need to step up their recruiting efforts for Derek Carr if the latest report on him steering to the Jets is true.

The Derek Carr sweepstakes may be taking an interesting detour. According to a Sunday evening report by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Carr has a 'slight lean' toward the New York Jets as his next destination.

While the #Panthers and #Saints remain in the conversation for Derek Carr, the former Pro Bowl quarterback has a slight lean toward the #Jets as his next home as of now, per source. Nothing is final, but Jets -- who are linked to Aaron Rodgers -- have made an impression.

On Sunday morning, Fowler wrote that the Saints made a compelling case to Carr, and also pointed out that at least two other teams had reached out on the free agent in recent weeks.

Fowler wrote, "New Orleans believes it has made a compelling case to Carr, with solid pass-catching targets, a good defense and the chance to play in a dome at least 10 games per season. Carr is prioritizing the right fit, and once he commits to that, a potential contract will be hashed out."

As we wrote about earlier this week, Carr is the Saints' top target. Essentially, he's Plan A and B, and they view him as a long-term solution. If New Orleans does end up missing out, then a Jimmy Garoppolo could be in the mix. A Carr decision is expected to be made before the start of the new league year.

Carr would help put the Saints in a great position to win their division or at least get into a Wild Card. The NFC is the far superior conference currently, and the NFC South could end up being really bad again in 2023. Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen might have to step up their recruiting efforts for Carr, and they can't let him get away. They still have some work to be done on the salary cap side, but they always find a way to make it happen.
