Jameis Winston To Have Jersey Retired At Florida State
New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston will have his collegiate number retired at Florida State University this weekend. The 10-0 Florida State Seminoles, ranked Number 4 in the nation, host the North Alabama Lions on Saturday. Winston's number 5 will be officially retired during a ceremony following the first quarter, according to school officials.
Winston played at Florida State in 2013 and 2014. As a freshman in 2013, he helped lead the Seminoles to a 14-0 record and the final BCS National Championship with a win over Auburn in the Rose Bowl. He threw for 4,057 yards with 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions that season, becoming the youngest player to ever win the Heisman Trophy.
In 2014, Winston threw for 3,907 yards with 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. The Seminoles were undefeated during the regular season, but finished 13-1 after losing to Oregon in the first College Football Playoff Semifinal.
Winston led the ACC in passing yards, total yards, touchdown passes, and passing efficiency in 2013 and 2014. He finished his collegiate career with a record of 26-1 as a starter. His 7,964 passing yards are fourth in Florida State history, with his 65 touchdowns second in Seminole record books.
Winston becomes just the 11th player in Florida State history to have their jersey or number retired. He joins Seminole greats Fred Biletnikoff, Ron Sellers, Ron Simmons, Deion Sanders, Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn, Chris Weinke, Derrick Brooks, Terrell Buckley and Marvin Jones in the honor.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Winston with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He'd play five seasons with the Buccaneers, throwing for 19,737 yards with 121 touchdowns and 88 interceptions. In 2019, Winston became just the eighth NFL player to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season.
Winston, 29, has been with the Saints since 2020. He has a 6-4 record as a starter for New Orleans, throwing for 2,326 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
