Michael Thomas Trade Rumors: Cowboys Should 'Kick The Tires' With Saints
The trade rumors for New Orleans Saints players are hitting the sports programs. UNDISPUTED co-host Keyshawn Johnson referenced his nephew, Michael Thomas, as someone the Cowboys should pursue in a trade with the Saints (3-4).
Johnson referred to the Saints as a team "teetering downward" after two straight losses. "I would kick the tires there. He's on an expiring contract. He's healthy," Johnson said about the All-Pro wide receiver.
Yesterday, our colleague Mike Fisher of CowboysSi.com wrote, "Thomas is even more palatable [than Denver's Courland Sutton] for 2023 in that he's a $10 million receiver this year, and playing on a one-year deal; that's remarkably affordable, and obviously automatically escapable following this season." Furthermore, Fish pegged him as a one-year "rental" for Dallas vying for the postseason.
Michael Thomas Quietly Is Having A Nice Comeback For Saints
Parting with Thomas would be problematic for an already struggling New Orleans Saints offense. It's doubtful Mickey Loomis would be interested in parting with the team's most dependable wide receiver. Thomas leads the wideouts with a 55.6% success rate and a 63.0% clutch receiving rate. Although his 34 receptions out of 54 targets for 371 yards and one touchdown don't leap off the page, he's been a solid performer this season, giving New Orleans 18 first downs. Especially after the rough week his teammate Chris Olave is having — on and off the field — trading Thomas would be a drastic move by the Saints.
Should New Orleans lose to Indianapolis on Sunday, several playoff contenders may inquire about the services of star players like Michael Thomas or Alvin Kamara. However, it would be challenging to pull the trigger since New Orleans is unlikely to be entirely out of the playoff race in the NFC South.
