Report: Former LSU Tiger Signs to Saints Practice Squad
The New Orleans Saints are set to add another young wide receiver to their practice squad Wednesday afternoon. Per Saints News Network's John Hendrix, wideout and return specialist Jontre Kirklin has been signed to the team's practice squad.
Kirklin did not find his way back to Louisiana until signing with New Orleans on Aug. 6. Despite several veteran players at the same position having a head start, the former LSU Tiger outlasted many of them. Veterans like Keke Coutee, Bryan Edwards and James Washington were all moved on from while Kirklin continue to stick around and contribute.
The young wideout's speed is the first thing that catches the eye. Not to be forgotten, his decisiveness in the return game and yards after catch ability do not take long to impress.
Through he was targeted only once in his opening preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs, Kirklin had a productive trio of exhibition games. He led all Saints wide receivers with 127 receiving yards, amounting to an average of 14.1 yards per catch on 9 receptions. He also led the team in kick return yards with 119 while averaging 23.3 yards per.
The former Lutcher graduate has found a way to stick with his hometown team. As a practice squad member, he could be elevated to the gameday roster a maximum of three times during the regular season. With his return ability in particular, those opportunities may indeed arise.
