Report: Saints Add Standout Wide Receiver to Practice Squad
Many thought the New Orleans Saints were taking a big risk when they waived undrafted rookie wide wide receiver Shaq David. While that risk may have been present, it all worked out. The Saints added Davis, the former South Carolina State standout, to their practice squad Wednesday afternoon, per NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill.
Davis was a preseason standout, and for good reason. He finished with 7 catches on 13 targets for 101 receiving yards in his three preseason games of action. He also had a touchdown reception wiped out by a penalty.
In his second matchup, against the Los Angeles Chargers, Davis led all pass-catches with 63 receiving yards on 3 catches. He showed his big-play talent but also his above the rim prowess making big plays not only during the exhibition games, but throughout practice as well.
Davis is more than just a big body, he bring with him decent speed and exceptional leaping ability as well. He may not be on the active roster to start the season, but he may still get opportunities to contribute.
Teams can elevate a player from the practice a maximum of three times throughout the season before being forced to either add that player to the active roster or send him to the open market. If the right opportunity or matchup presents itself, the young wideout may be called upon to help make an impact.
