NFL Network Analyst: Saints Need To 'Look In The Mirror'
NFL Network analyst Cameron Wolfe his analysis of New Orleans to SNN after the Saints lost 31-24 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7. "Disappointing so far, Wolfe said. "Offensively in particular. Derek Carr was brought in as a big free-agent signing. I think you hope that you saw a lot of the elements that we saw in the fourth quarter of the game to be more consistently. Red zone has been a struggle, and they just seem like they're not on the same page yet."
New Orleans is scoring touchdowns within the red zone at the rate of 37.5%, which is the fifth-worst in the league. Derek Carr led the Saints into scoring position, hoping to tie the game at 31. From the six-yard line, they failed to score on four straight attempts:
- Incompletion to Michael Thomas
- Incompletion to Taysom Hill
- Dropped pass by Foster Moreau
- Incompletion to Chris Olave
The frustration is mounting with the fans, but Carr shared a different opinion with Wolfe about the team. "I talked to Derek Carr a little bit in the locker room. He still shows confidence that they're going to figure this out." Carr completed 33-of-55 passes for 301 yards, a touchdown, and one interception against the Jaguars.
Wolfe believes New Orleans is still in the race for the NFC South title, although the players and coaches must have honest self-evaluation this week. "He's got to play better. Point blank, period. I think if you look in the mirror, play-caller Pete Carmichael and Derek Carr, and try to figure out how we come out of this better. Even guys like Chris Olave. There were some routes where he's got to finish routes."
Head coach Dennis Allen informed the local media that the Saints' offense for their Week 8 game against the Colts would remain the same. "We'll cross that bridge if we get to it," Allen said. With a record of 3-4, New Orleans is considered 1.5-point underdogs by Las Vegas bookmakers against the Indianapolis Colts, who also have a record of 3-4. Kickoff will occur at noon CT from Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 29. Fox Sports will broadcast the game.
