Saints Practice Squad Tracker
The New Orleans Saints made a flurry of personnel moves on Tuesday to meet the NFL's mandatory 53-man roster deadline. On Wednesday, the Saints and other teams can begin adding to a 16-player practice squad.
Rules for the practice squad are a little different than in the past. This season, a practice squad player can be a game day active if announced 90 minutes prior to kickoff when a team announces their inactives.
This is different than in years past, when a player would have to be activated to the active roster two days before a game. This can happen with up to two players each week and will not subject the player to waivers after a game appearance if not elevated to the active roster.
A practice squad player is eligible to be activated to a game day roster up to three times during the season. On the fourth, the player must either be signed to the active roster or released from the team and subject to waivers before a potential return.
Practice squad players can be signed by another team. However, once signed he must be on that team’s active roster for the upcoming week. An upcoming opponent may not sign a practice squad player from the team they will be facing that week.
Ten of a team's practice squad players must have less than two years of accrued NFL experience. There are no restrictions on the other six practice squad members.
