Saints Rework Andrus Peat's Contract

Andrus Peat's contract was one of the last hurdles for the Saints to tackle for their salary cap outlook, and they've handled it.
In this story:

One of the last big question marks for the Saints has been answered. According to Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap, Andrus Peat has agreed on a revised contract to help save New Orleans about $9.5 million in cap space. NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill reports that the reworked contract takes Peat's salary from $18.3 million down to about $8.8 million.

Peat, the former 13th Overall pick in the 2015 draft, has been an important part of the Saints offensive line over the years. However, availability has always been a challenge for him, as he's never been able to go a full season. When he's at the top of his game, things certainly flow well, as he's key in the screen game for New Orleans. He had three-straight Pro Bowl appearances from 2018-2020.

Restructuring contracts was the main theme for the front office this offseason, as it has fueled the team being able to get under the salary cap. The Saints were able to maneuver over $50 million in overages while being able to keep some key players who were expected to be gone.

The team is operating with a compete now mentality, and is certainly in for a rebound year after some of the moves they've made. Of course, health is going to be a big part of things. For the offensive line, what will be interesting is what happens with James Hurst and Trevor Penning. The second-year leap for Penning is expected to see him compete heavily and potentially start at left tackle, while Hurst has been a valuable asset to the building and line. Could Hurst move inside to play some guard and compete some with Peat? We'll see what happens, but it wouldn't be surprising.
