Three Saints Legends Selected To Senior Bowl Anniversary Team
There has been a long-standing history of the New Orleans Saints drafting prospects who participate in the Senior Bowl. The annual all-star game for college seniors looking to enter the NFL has been a mainstay for the Saints scouting brass and has led to them selecting some franchise cornerstone players.
This year marks a milestone year for the event and as such, the Senior Bowl named its 75th Anniversary Team. On that team, three former Saints have been named.
Two draft selections, tight end Jimmy Graham (2010) and tackle Terron Armstead (2013) were selected. Running back Darren Sproles who was acquired via free agency in 2011 is also recognized on the list.
“The 75th Anniversary Team selections were made through a process that included a public online fan vote,” the Senior Bowl announced via press release. “A poll of all 32 NFL general managers, and consideration from the Senior Bowl’s selection committee.”
Executive director of the Senior Bowl Jim Nagy also shared high praise for the more than 40 players selected to represent the Senior Bowl’s undeniable success. “This 75th Anniversary Team includes many of the greatest players in NFL history and they are all legendary players for their respective franchises.” Quite the recognition for these Saints and NFL greats.
Armstead spent 9 seasons with New Orleans anchoring the all-important left tackle position. He is inarguably one of the best players the franchise has seen on the offensive line or otherwise.
Sproles is selected to the Senior Bowl’s anniversary roster as a return specialist. But his role was much more expansive in New Orleans. In his three seasons with the Saints, Sproles put up incredible numbers as a rusher, receiver and returner. Including leading the league on 2011 with 2,696 all-purpose yards.
Graham, who reunited with the team this off-season, is one of the best weapons (much like Sproles) of the team’s history. In a season wherein he was selected to both the NFL Pro Bowl and received a first-team All-Pro nod, he led the NFL with 16 receiving touchdowns. He currently has 387 receptions, for 4,760 receiving yards and 52 touchdowns and counting as a Saint.
