Cowboys Tryout for Jacob Eason, Ex Seahawks and Huskies QB; Could Dallas Sign?
The Dallas Cowboys are in good shape at the top of their depth chart at quarterback with starter Dak Prescott and capable backup Cooper Rush heading up the roster. But this week, as part of a "street free agent'' search, they hosted seven players inside their team HQ at The Star in Frisco, and among them a QB with local name value ...
Jacob Eason, the former Washington Huskies standout who once upon a time considered a potential first-round pick in the NFL Draft, who last year had a cup of coffee with the Seattle Seahawks, was in DFW for a workout.
Eason, 25 and a Washington native, was part of the Seahawks quarterback competition a year ago at training camp. But Geno Smith pulled away on his way to a revelation of a season in helping Seattle to the playoffs, and Drew Lock won the job as the No. 2 guy.
Eason has bounced around both before and after his stint with his home-state Seahawks. He signed with the Panthers in January before being released in May. Before, that, Eason has also had stints with the 49ers and Colts - the team that drafted him in the fourth round Eason of the 2020 NFL Draft following his slide.
Dallas did not end up signing either of the two QBs who participated in the workout; the other, as reported by CowboysSI.com, was the athletic former Rams helper Bryce Perkins. The Cowboys seemed to have been in particular search for a receiver and ended up signing speedy Tyron Johnson while cutting the in-trouble practice-squadder Antonio Callaway.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy talked before the 2023 Draft about wanting to add a prospect at QB; that did not come to fruition, and Will Grier is the incumbent No. 3 guy.
Said McCarthy recently: "I really like the progress Will Grier has made. He’s been here the whole time. Obviously, Cooper gives us that veteran presence and everything, so it’s a very healthy room. Having a fourth quarterback is a little bit more of a challenge in today’s NFL than it was years ago. So all those things factor in.”
All told, that doesn't sound like a vote of confidence for Dallas circling back on Eason, who started his career at Georgia after having been the No. 4 overall rated prospect as a five-star high school quarterback. The 6-6 Eason eventually chose to transfer to Washington, where in his final season before the draft he threw for 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
