Geno Smith Gets Contract, But Seahawks 'Connected' to QBs in NFL Draft

Despite signing Geno Smith to a new contract, the Seahawks may consider selecting a quarterback in the first round of this year's NFL Draft.
In this story:

"Connected.''

It's a clever way of phrasing the position the Seattle Seahawks now occupy as the April NFL Draft approaches.

Yes, Seattle just got done signing QB Geno Smith to a new contract. But consider its length (three years) and the way that it is structured ... and recognize that the Seahawks may already be considering a plan of succession at the position.

And, ultimately, know that selecting a quarterback in the first round of this year's draft remains very much in play.

Coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks are "totally connected" to the quarterbacks in this year's draft, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Among the prospects they are "connected'' to?

Assume that Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's CJ Stroud are off the board by the time the Seahawks' turn comes. Seattle owns the No. 5 overall pick in this year's draft.

A connection with Anthony Richardson of Florida? So it seems. (See "Felt Different.'')

A connection with Kentucky's Will Levis and others? So it seems.

There is no "right way'' to do this; it can be argued that a commitment to Geno means the franchise, for the short-term, needs to surround him with weapons. But the idea of having a franchise QB in place starting, say, next year, and remaining in place for a decade-plus.

The appeal is obvious. So the "connection'' is logical.
