Geno Smith Injured, Seattle Seahawks Lead New York Giants at Halftime
The Seattle Seahawks are battling the New York Giants on Monday at MetLife Stadium, but quarterback Geno Smith suffered a knee injury in the second quarter after landing awkwardly while being tackled. He was driven on a golf cart back to the locker room and is questionable to return.
But Drew Lock entered the game at quarterback and led a second-quarter touchdown drive that gave Seattle a 14-3 lead headed into halftime.
The Seahawks also lost Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams just nine plays into his first game back since Week 1 of last season. He exited to the locker room in the first quarter as the team announced that he will not return.
Both sides were sloppy early. A lack of offensive production and a flurry of flags allowed each team three possessions apiece in the first quarter alone. The Seahawks committed four penalties in the first half for 34 yards.
But it was the final minute of the first quarter that brought fireworks.
Seahawks linebacker Jordyn Brooks recovered a fumble of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones after a strip sack from Mario Edwards Jr. He returned it right near the goal line before Smith found DK Metcalf for a toe-tap touchdown from six yards out to give Seattle a 7-0 lead.
After Smith suffered his apparent injury, the Giants responded with a 55-yard field goal a few possessions later to cut it 7-3. Lock entered and led a seven-play, 75-yard drive that was highlighted by a 52-yard catch-and-run from tight end Noah Fant and an ensuing one-yard touchdown from Kenneth Walker III.
The Seahawks, who will receive the second-half kickoff, finished the first half with the same amount of offensive yards (155) as the Giants.
