Seahawks BREAKING: Geno Smith Opens Contract Talks with Seattle; ‘We’ll Work It Out’
The Seattle Seahawks have opened contract talks with free-agent quarterback Geno Smith - says Smith himself, while expressing optimism the two sides will “work things out.”
Smith, a finalist for the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year, told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Friday that the parties “have had talks.”
“We’re in the process of getting all that settled right now,” Smith said. “It’s looking very good.”
The journeyman Smith took over at QB after the trade of Russell Wilson to the Broncos and led the Seahawks to a surprise playoff season.
There has been speculation that Smith could receive a new deal in Seattle worth well in excess of $30 million APY.
As noted by the Seattle Times, Smith also appeared on “The Pivot Podcast” on Friday, where he restated his desire to re-sign with the Seahawks.
“I love Seattle,” Smith said. “We have a great relationship. I think we’ll work things out.”
Smith, 32, was once seen as a “bridge” QB in Seattle, a player who could be a placeholder while the Seahawks searched for their next standout at the position. The NFL Draft could still offer options. But the opening of contracts talks qualifies as a hint as to what the Seahawks plan to do at the position.
“We’ve got our guy,” coach Pete Carroll said at season’s end, adding that Seattle’s promise with Smith means “the sky’s the limit.”
