DK Metcalf 'Emotion': Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll Reveals Speech to 'Fiery' Star
The Seattle Seahawks completely fell apart during their Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, accumulating just three yards of total offense in the second half.
On top of the lack of production from the offense, there was also an issue with star wide receiver DK Metcalf who got involved with some unnecessary extracurriculars. With the game well out-of-hand late in the fourth quarter, Metcalf threw cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the ground with a block from the side at play's end. Something that fired up the Rams sideline, and also something that Pete Carroll explained during his radio show he discussed with Metcalf, again.
"DK and I talked for a long time last night about [how] that's not what we can allow to happen because that means that they can control him and get after him," Carroll said on his Seattle Sports 710-AM radio show. "So, he has to elevate above that. So it's a challenge. This is nothing new. DK's been an emotional, feisty, fiery player since the day he got here, and that is who he is. But he has to also manage that so they don't take advantage of it."
According to ESPN, Metcalf has now been flagged eight times in his career for either taunting, unsportsmanlike conduct, unnecessary roughness or disqualification. A number that he leads the NFL in since his rookie season in 2019.
The penalty essentially killed the little momentum that the Seahawks had on that drive taking a second-and-2, and turning it into second-and-17 from the 28, which led to another punt after Geno Smith was sacked on consecutive plays.
Metcalf's temper hasn't been a major issue yet to the point where the league has suspended him, but the Seahawks also can't afford for it to turn into something that cumulates into something that severe.
