Seahawks CB Andrew Whitaker Suffers Season-Ending Injury

Injured while blocking on a punt return, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Andrew Whitaker will undergo surgery to repair a damaged patellar tendon.

After exiting the field on a cart during the team's annual mock game scrimmage on Friday, the season is officially over for Seattle Seahawks undrafted rookie cornerback Andrew Whitaker.

According to KPRC 2 Houston, Whitaker suffered a significant patellar tendon injury in his knee while attempting to make a block on a punt return. He will need surgery to repair the damage and an extensive rehab period of 10-12 months awaits.

Whitaker, who starred at Washington University, a Division III school in St. Louis, as both a championship track athlete and football player, signed with the Seahawks on the first day of training camp last month. He previously participated in the team's rookie minicamp in May and also played for the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL this spring.

Since signing, Whitaker has been competing with third-team cornerbacks and battling for snaps on multiple special teams units.

With Whitaker's camp and season now over, Seattle will have an open roster spot to fill once he lands on injured reserve and could be on the lookout for additional cornerback depth to replace him with the preseason opener looming next week against Minnesota at Lumen Field.

The Seahawks may also explore running back and receiver depth after Kenny McIntosh suffered a knee sprain in Friday's scrimmage and Dareke Young didn't play with a hip/groin issue. The severity of both injuries remains unknown at this stage.
