Seahawks 90-Man Countdown: LB Cam Bright
With the calendar flipping to June and offseason activities well underway league-wide, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC in less than two months, officially ushering in the 2023 season.
To celebrate the new incoming season, I will be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, exploring best and worst case scenarios and what to expect from each player entering the 2023 campaign.
Cam Bright, Linebacker
Height/Weight: 6-0, 228 pounds
2022 Stats*: 60 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one interception
*College stats at Washington
Following a standout prep career at Park Crossing High School in Alabama, including a remarkable 16.5 sacks as a senior, Bright took his talents north to Pittsburgh. Playing significant snaps after being redshirt in 2017, he racked up 177 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and 23.5 tackles for loss in four seasons with the Panthers, eventually helping the school to an ACC Championship in 2021.
Already with a degree in hand, he transferred to Washington for his final year of eligibility and was voted as a captain by his new teammates, earning Honorable Mention All-Pac 12 recognition in his lone season with the program. While he turned in a quality pro day workout, he went undrafted and signed with the Seahawks shortly after the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Best-Case Scenario: Showcasing his speed and tackling ability on special teams, Bright climbs up the depth chart and surpasses Vi Jones and Jon Rhattigan, sneaking onto the roster behind Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks, and Devin Bush as a reserve linebacker who plays significant snaps on kick and punt coverage units.
Worst-Case Scenario: Undersized to play linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, Bright struggles working off blocks throughout camp and the preseason, leading to his departure in final roster cuts without returning as a member of the practice squad.
What to Expect in 2023: Athletically, Bright possesses a quality array of tools, including sub-4.6 speed and elite explosiveness for the linebacker position. He's also a high character player off the field who served as a captain at Washington and Pittsburgh, an indicator of the respect coaches and teammates held for him. Those attributes should serve him well trying to carve out a role in the NFL as a core special teamer with enough upside to potentially play on defense at some point.
However, Bright's lack of size can't be overlooked at a significant issue and at least in the short term, the Seahawks have no shortage of experienced talent with Wagner, Brooks, and Bush all in front of him on the depth chart. In addition, the return of Rhattigan and Jones provides two additional competitors he will have to surpass to win a roster spot. Though he may be in consideration as a practice squad candidate if he performs well in August, it's difficult to see a path to the 53.
