Seahawks Coach Ryan Grubb Reveals Wild Journey To Seattle: 'Unicorn Event!'

New Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has taken quite the eventful path to the NFL.

Only a month and a half into 2024, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has had enough excitement to fill the entire year.

It all started on New Year's Day, when Grubb helped the Washington Huskies defeat the Texas Longhorns in the Sugar Bowl to book a spot in the National Championship Game. While the Huskies eventually lost the title game to Michigan, Grubb's next big event would come just a few days later when he followed Kalen DeBoer to become the Alabama Crimson Tide's next offensive coordinator.

Then, despite affirming his commitment to Alabama just days earlier, Grubb returned to the Pacific Northwest to become the Seahawks' offensive coordinator in early February.

Grubb has clearly been on quite the ride over the first several weeks of the year, but at the end of the day, he's very pleased to be where he is now.

“Yeah, it’s been pretty eventful for sure,” Grubb said, per The Seattle Times. “It’s been a really exciting month, it’s been a tough month. But at the end of the day, it’s obviously a privilege and an honor to be here.”

If not for an interaction with new Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald last year, Grubb may not have ended up coming back to Seattle. Grubb and Macdonald crossed paths at the NFL Scouting Combine last year and quickly started building a relationship. So when Macdonald became the Seahawks' head coach, Grubb was high up on his list for an offensive coordinator.

”Kind of knew that potentially there would be an opportunity like this down the line,” Grubb said. “And didn’t necessarily think it would happen the very first year, but that was the reality.

“The first part was staying in communication, as Mike obviously had a great season as a [defensive] coordinator with the [Baltimore] Ravens, and I knew his name would come up in some search opportunities. And luckily for me, he ended right here in Seattle.”

Now Grubb, 47, has his first chance as a coach at the NFL level. Despite the winding road he's taken to get to this point, he's determined to make that chance count with the Seahawks.

Seahawks Coaching Grades: Grubb Hire an A+ Move?

“Man, this is like the unicorn event in coaching,” Grubb said. “So the fact that I got to stay right here and do it in a city, in a place that I already love, and I’ve had two years to let it marinate as far as what John Schneider does here and the ownership with the Seahawks, and just how classy an organization this is and how driven they are to success, it makes it really special.”
