Seahawks 'Logical' Offseason Priority: Sign LB Uchenna Nwosu to Extension?
The Seattle Seahawks are weeks away from the beginning of training camp, with both OTAs and mandatory minicamp now in the rearview mirror. They have about a month of "summer break" before reporting back to the facility to start the final phase of the offseason.
While players and coaches will undoubtedly have time to take off before training camp, the front office and personnel department have one last time to start planning their final moves. Those moves can come in many different shapes, like adding more depth to a certain position via free agency or even agreeing to a contract extension with someone.
As things currently stand, the latter is the most likely option, as Seattle doesn't have much room remaining financially. OverTheCap projects the Seahawks to have just $7 million in cap space, meaning any addition must be on a league-minimum deal. Yet, with current players on their roster coming up on contract years, this time could prove valuable to go ahead and iron out contract extensions.
And in a recent article, ESPN claims the Seahawks should make extending the contract of linebacker Uchenna Nwosu their priority heading into the start of training camp.
"Nwosu was fantastic for the Seahawks in his first season there in 2022, posting career-highs across the board, including 9.5 sacks," ESPN writes. "With a comparable season this year, Nwosu would be positioned as one of the top free agent pass-rushers next March, making an extension a logical proposition."
The 26-year-old edge rusher joined the Seahawks last offseason after playing out his rookie deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, and Nwosu proved to be an impact player for Seattle on defense. As ESPN notes, Nwosu recorded 9.5 sacks, which had him tied with Darrell Taylor for most on the team.
Some may still argue that even after a career year, the Seahawks should wait to extend the young edge rusher to ensure he can sustain his form from last fall. That strategy of waiting could prove risky, as another impressive season from Nwosu could warrant him asking for an even bigger contract.
Yet, with the edge rusher's current cap hit at $13 million, an extension could prove valuable. The Seahawks could not only lock down one of their potential building blocks but also free up some immediate cap space in the process.
