Seahawks Could Cut 1st-Round Pick Devin Bush? 'Asinine' Rumor

The Seattle Seahawks could move on from a former first-round draft pick in linebacker Devin Bush? Our Corbin K. Smith labels the rumor "asinine.''

Here at AllSeahawks.com at SI, we try to run a clean operation. We wipe our feet before entering AllSeahawks.com at SI Headquarters. We hold doors open for one another and we rarely burp. We're polite. Unless ...

The Seattle Seahawks could move on from a former first-round NFL Draft pick in just-acquired linebacker Devin Bush, according to one media outlet who lists him as a “cut candidate” as we head toward training camp at the end of July.

We can offer you the deep-version analysis of the idea, floated by the well-meaning folks at FanSided. That would be the "clean'' and "polite'' thing to do.

But first, we are obliged to give it to you rough. So, shouting across our luxurious AllSeahawks.com at SI Headquarters Newsroom in response to the idea is veteran Seahawks watcher Corbin K. Smith, who is offering a one-word review of the suggestion.

"Asinine!'' exclaimed Smith, and that could be the end of that. But again, let's mix in some "polite'' here.

FanSided gave an indication, maybe accidentally (by terming it "dead cap value''), that there was money to be saved here. But actually, it'd be just $500,000. So that ain't it.

FanSided, in pushing to cut Bush, notes, "One of the biggest reasons is that Bush isn’t exactly a Pro Bowler, and wouldn’t have been welcomed back by the Pittsburgh Steelers because Bush just hasn’t been good in a couple of years.”

Of course, the Seahawks knew exactly what they were getting into when they signed him in March to this "prove-it'' deal. They would surely like him, at not yet 25 years old, to recapture the gifts that made him a Steelers first-rounder (No. 10 overall in 2019) who finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. But their paltry $3.5 million investment in him frames exactly what they know to be the issues ...

And maybe, beyond the 2020 knee injury, there is/was a “lack of maturity” as cited in a December 2021 USA Today story. Of course, a) that was almost two years ago and b) Yes, the Seahawks are aware of any red-flag stuff at a level that trumps what FanSided (or AllSeahawks at SI) can possibly know.

Bush as NFL Comeback Player of the Year? Doubtful. He is here as an insurance policy as Jordyn Brooks is working toward a recovery from a torn ACL suffered at the end of the regular season last year. Even as coach Pete Carroll has mentioned "There’s some optimism that it could happen (as early as training camp),'' Brooks hasn't been cleared for 2023.

If Brooks is suddenly healthy while at the same time - in camp or after that - Bush becomes a negative in any way? The Seahawks would obviously consider a change. But right now? Devin Bush is a reclamation project that Seattle hopes fills a need. And it's "asinine'' to think otherwise.
