Seahawks Trade for Derrick Henry?! Seattle Listed as 'Logical' Landing Spot
The Seattle Seahawks seemingly have their future at running back locked down, and it's hard to argue with.
After a stellar rookie season, the Seahawks made it clear that Kenneth Walker III is the future of their backfield by not choosing to seriously pursue a new deal with the often-injured Rashaad Penny, who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles instead.
Rest can now be assured that Walker III will be leading the Seattle backfield headed into his second season. But in the spirit of bold offseason gossip and predictions, unlikely scenarios are getting in the way of what's obvious.
Tennessee Titans star running back Derrick Henry could very well be traded this offseason, as speculation about his potential departure continues to loom entering the final year of his contract. With Walker III, the Seahawks are seemingly far from being a fit.
And when listing the top available trade candidates for this season, CBS Sports unsurprisingly included Henry. But the surprising part? The Seahawks were listed as a "logical landing spot" for him, joining the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills.
"Logical" might be a bit of a stretch.
Sure, the Titans could technically trade Henry wherever they'd like. If a deal with them and the Seahawks worked out for both sides involving the star ball-carrier, Tennessee could send him to the Pacific Northwest.
But getting to that makes this far more "illogical" than "logical." Tennessee could be looking for a strong return in a potential deal, as the team likely wouldn't settle for just a second-round pick for dealing away the franchise cornerstone.
The Seahawks certainly have the trade pieces worthy of intriguing a Titans team that could be on the verge of a rebuild, especially if they deal away Henry. Seattle owns the No. 5 and No. 20 picks in this year's draft, picks that obviously hold some immense value.
But after Walker III finished 11th in carries (228), 12th in rushing yards (1,050) and tied for 10th in rushing touchdowns (nine) as a rookie, trading away him or any part of the team's future - whether it be picks or players - for an aging Henry that could realistically only have one or two years would be far from a progressive move.
Every team in the NFL would certainly love to have Henry ... at the right cost. After all, even at 29, he remains one of the league's top running backs and overall players in the sport. He finishing second in the league this past season in both rushing yards (1,538) and rushing yards per game (96.1), first in carries (349) and tied for second in rushing touchdowns (13)
In the unlikely scenario that the Seahawks indeed make a push for Henry, all Seattle coach Pete Carroll has to do is take one look at film from the 2021 matchup with the Titans in Week 2. Henry had one of the best games of his career that day in Seattle, finishing with 35 carries for 182 yards and three touchdowns to go along with six catches for 55 yards in a 33-30 overtime win. All three of his scores came in the second half.
However, the two teams have taken vastly different directions this season. If the Seahawks were in championship-or-bust mode headed into the 2023 campaign, maybe trading for Henry would be a move on the minds of the 12s.
But for now, it remains an "illogical" scenario for a Seahawks team that's focused on the bright future ahead for the franchise.
