Seahawks Show Resiliency in Win Over Lions: 'We're Just Getting Started!'

After a disappointing loss to open the season, the Seattle Seahawks rebounded for a gutsy overtime win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks entered Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field with their backs against the wall. Well, as much as a team can have its back to the wall two games into the season.

Seattle entered its season opener against the Los Angeles Rams as noticeable favorites, but the Seahawks didn't just lose, they were blown out in a 30-13 defeat. In that game, the offense went completely dry in the second half. After such an encouraging season, losing in such a fashion to open the new campaign was certainly deflating.

Already at 0-1, the Seahawks were desperate to get back in the win column on Sunday and avoid an 0-2 start. Doing so would be very difficult, as the Lions were riding high after beating the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs in their season opener. It took everything they had, but they pulled out a much-needed 37-31 win in overtime.

This win didn't come easy, but for Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, that's what makes it so special.

"Oh, God, this is why I’m so thrilled about capturing this day because this is as hard as it gets," Carroll told reporters after the game. "This is as hard as it can possibly be. Coming off beating the world champs on the road and starting the season and all of that and these guys were on fire, they were healthy enough, the whole thing. So, that’s because we respect them so much."

The Seahawks didn't just face adversity coming into the game, but in the middle of it as well. Two very important players, receiver D.K. Metcalf and cornerback Riq Woolen, left the game with injuries in the first half. While Metcalf returned soon after, Woolen remained out for the rest of the game.

Those injuries, combined with the Seahawks' motivation coming in, made the win that much sweeter.

"Last week is last week, has nothing to do with this week, and go out there and play ball and it wasn’t perfect today, but we found a way to win and that’s what matters,” quarterback Geno Smith told reporters after the game.

While they didn't start the season on the right foot, the Seahawks are confident that his victory can give them some much-needed momentum going forward.

“We’re just getting started," Carroll said. "It just takes a while to get it rolling . . . Think the absolute opposite of what happened last week when we jumped out, scored in a couple plays and away we go, here we go. Just very timely and very fortunate that we got that done.”
