Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon 'Shooting For' Week 1 Return

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon is still looking to make his NFL debut.
In this story:

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon sustained a hamstring injury during training camp that has kept him out for the preseason. The Seahawks wrapped up their exhibition slate on Saturday with a 19-15 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

But Seahawks fans likely won't have to wait much longer for Witherspoon to make his NFL debut. After Saturday's game, coach Pete Carroll said that the No. 5 overall pick is "shooting for" a return in Week 1 at home against the Los Angeles Rams.

“That’s what we are shooting for," Carroll said. He has been home too trying to get a great weekend in. I watched him run yesterday and he is flying. So he is going."

However, while Carroll is optimistic about the rookie's return to action, he admitted that displaying progress goes much deeper than running around at practice.

"There is a lot more to it than that," Carroll said. "There is the conditioning level that he can maintain and hold up with the workload of practices. We have to figure that out. It will be Tuesday before we get on the field, but he is working out with guys all weekend.”

The Seahawks and Rams will kickoff from Lumen Field in Week 1 on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:25 p.m. PT.
