Seahawks Draft Grade? 'Freaking Killed It!' Says NFL Analyst
The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL Draft with some serious firepower holding the No.5 and No.20 picks in the first round...and they didn't waste them.
Seattle took Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon with the No. 5 pick and then added receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with the No. 20 selection. The Seahawks impressively built their roster with and after these two first-round picks.
The franchise then took defensive end Derick Hall and running back Zach Charbonnet in the third and four rounds to solidify its roster. The Seahawks then added several other team needs, as guard Anthony Bradford, defensive tackle Cameron Young, defensive end Mike Morris, center Olusegun Oluwatimi, safety Jerrick Reed II and running back Kenny McIntosh all now calling Seattle home.
ESPN's Matt Miller, who joined Brock Huard and Mike Salk on Seattle Sports Radio, was thrilled with the Seahawks' draft haul.
"Freaking killed it," Miller said. "Got my No. 1 corner, my No. 1 wide receiver. A pass rusher that a lot of people thought could have gone in the first round. And then I really thought some of the Day 3 picks were really good, from a scheme fit, from a value, from a need - this team checked every need that they have."
With Witherspoon in the secondary alongside Tariq Woolen and adding Smith-Njigba to an offense that already has D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, the Seahawks are clearly looking to improve on last season's over-achieving efforts.
Additionally, filling specific team needs is something every franchise aims to do via the draft but for Seattle, on paper at least, they have done just that.
After surprising everyone last season, most now know the Seahawks are coming, and with a draft that Miller calls an "A-Draft," Seattle's rebuild post the Russell Wilson era might not take as long as first thought.
"For a playoff team to be able to do that says a lot," Miller said. "When you can go in and check off needs, it's just really smart team building. It was an A-Draft in my opinion."
