Seahawks Drafting Georgia DL Jalen Carter a 'Cliche' - Insider
The 2023 NFL Draft is just over a week away, and there are several pathways the Seattle Seahawks could take with the No. 5 overall selection.
Could it be an edge defender like Alabama's Will Anderson or Texas Tech's Tyree Wilson? What about a move for Illinois corner Devon Witherspoon? Or maybe even a quarterback, like Florida's Anthony Richardson?
According to NBC Sports insider Peter King, the large majority of personnel around the league think the answer isn't any of those three players.
Instead? Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
"It’s become almost a cliché, how many team officials think the Seahawks will take Carter with the fifth overall pick," King writes.
Once viewed as the top player in the class by some, Carter's stock has fallen after his involvement in multiple driving-related incidents, one of which led to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing following the death of teammate Devin Willock and Georgia staff member Chandler LeCroy.
However, per King, "an increasing number of people around the league" feel that Carter has "done enough in his visits to not sink like a stone on draft night" - which could ultimately result in him being a Seahawk.
A former five-star recruit who earned All-American honors this past season, the 22-year-old Carter finished his Georgia career with six sacks, 18 tackles for loss and 71 quarterback hurries.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider have stressed the need to keep adding to their defensive line, while ESPN recently revealed that "a source in Seattle said to expect defensive line help," which points to either Carter or Anderson.
And with that, the odds of the Seahawks drafting Carter appear to be increasing - though for some, it's already a "cliche."
