Seahawks QB Drew Lock Shows Potential vs. Vikings, But Questions Remain

Seattle Seahawks' Drew Lock looks to prove that he can be a serviceable quarterback in the NFL.
In this story:

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Minnesota Vikings 24-13 in their preseason opener at Lumen Field on Thursday, providing many understudies with an opportunity to experience game action.

This included quarterback Drew Lock, who had the chance to play for most of the game. While Lock was engaged in a tight competition with Geno Smith for the starting quarterback position last season, this year, he aims to demonstrate that he can be a serviceable backup while adding to his film for the future.

Lock had a solid outing, completing 17 of 24 passes and for 191 yards. The signal-caller showed flashes of potential during a pair of touchdown passes, including a 30-yard strike to rookie receiver Jake Bobo, which helped Seattle take the lead late in the third quarter.

However, Lock's previous turnover woes appear to persist. Throughout his 21 starts with the Denver Broncos, Lock threw 20 interceptions, and this issue remains one of the most pressing questions about his game. These concerns resurfaced tonight when Lock made a poor judgment, attempting a tight-window throw to rookie receiver Matt Landers. However, Vikings rookie cornerback Jaylin Williams successfully capitalized on the opportunity by intercepting the pass.

The remainder of the preseason will be crucial for Lock, as his ability to sustain clean, turnover-free football will likely instill confidence in coach Pete Carroll and his staff regarding their backup option should Smith suffer an injury. However, if Lock's turnovers continue as they did during his time with the Broncos, the Seahawks may consider exploring alternative options in the unfortunate event of Smith's injury.
