The Seattle Seahawks will see a lot more of former assistant coach Nick Sorensen next season.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the division-rival San Francisco 49ers have hired Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator. Sorensen, 45, has worked his way up quickly with the 49ers, as he started as a defensive assistant in 2022, became a defensive pass game specialist last season and is now the defensive coordinator.

Sorensen is also the 49ers third defensive coordinator in three years. He replaces Steve Wilks, whom the 49ers fired after their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58. Before Wilks was DeMeco Ryans, who is now the head coach of the Houston Texans.

After a 10-year career as primarily a backup and special teams player, Sorensen began the next chapter of his NFL journey as the Seahawks' assistant special teams coach in 2013. He held multiple titles over his eight-year run in Seattle, but most-notably served as the team's defensive backs coach from 2017-2020.

Sorensen also spent one year with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, serving as Urban Meyer's special teams coordinator.
