Seahawks Final Mock Draft: Seattle Takes QB & D-Line Help
The NFL Draft will see the Seattle Seahawks make two first-round picks, giving them a unique opportunity to build off an unexpected playoff appearance last season. However, what the Seahawks will do with those two picks is still unknown.
But the final mock draft from NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah reveals the final insight he's heard in the lead up to Day 1 of the draft. Starting with the No. 5 overall pick, Jeremiah has the Seahawks doing what many have projected, selecting Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
"Half of the league sources I talk to think Carter will be the pick here, while the other half has told me there’s no chance he’ll be Seattle’s selection at No. 5," Jeremiah wrote. "I don’t know what to believe, but he would be a great fit in Pete Carroll’s defense."
Carter was once the projected No. 1 pick in the draft, especially before the Chicago Bears traded the selection to the Carolina Panthers. However, he's seen his draft stock fall following the reveal of the misdemeanor charges filed against him for reckless driving and racing in the car accident that took the life of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy.
While rumors have persisted of teams removing the ex-Bulldog from their draft board entirely due to character concerns, Jeremiah doesn't see that as an issue for the Seahawks. Instead, the selection of Carter would help Seattle in its quest to overhaul its front seven and make it more akin to the 3-4 defensive scheme run by defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt.
With a big need checked off with the acquisition of Carter, undoubtedly still one of the most talented prospects in the draft, what would the Seahawks do next with the No. 20 pick?
Jeremiah has the Seahawks making a pick that has been in conversations for doing it with their first pick. The NFL.com analyst projects the Seahawks to take Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.
"I think Richardson could be in play at No. 5 for Seattle. He’d be a no-brainer pick for the Seahawks if he’s still available at No. 20," Jeremiah said. "He can learn under Geno Smith before taking over as QB1."
Despite the former Gator garnering a lot of hype due to his freaky traits, his lack of production in college may make him a gamble for the Seahawks to take at No. 5. But as Jeremiah said, after filling a big need upfront, taking Richardson at No. 20 makes a lot of sense as he could develop behind starting quarterback Geno Smith before taking over the reins.
