Seahawks QB Geno Smith 'Taking Command' as Leader at OTAs
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is entering his second season as the team's starter. After taking over from Russell Wilson and then winning the ensuing quarterback battle, Smith had a career year, but still has his doubters.
Now, as he begins OTA's as the leading man, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has detailed how Smith's current situation differs from just 12 months ago.
"Geno is in a little bit different situation than he was this past season when there was still the split reps," Waldron said. "... Every day Geno is grinding away in individual drills, really taking on that leadership role, enhancing that leadership role, take command of the huddle, take command of the guys from the start in OTA's."
Building on a good season in any estimation is a tough task as the Seahawks made the postseason, and Smith broke several franchise records. But with new offensive weapons in receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and running back Zach Charbonnet, Seattle's offense appears to be improved from last season.
Seattle ranked ninth in points scored per game (23.9) this past season. That number is expected to trend upward with the new additions to the offense.
Smith is getting a full offseason of first-team reps and a better understanding of the offense, so it is easy to see why so many are high on what Seattle could potentially do this upcoming season.
"I think Geno has maintained that professional approach, that desire to continuously improve his game," Waldron said.
It all comes back to Smith. After winning the job with his work ethic and talent last offseason, he isn't letting his standards drop despite there being no real competition for his spot, which bodes well for the Seahawks going forward.
