Seahawks' Lockett Reveals Why Geno Smith is 'Everything You Want in a Leader'

The Seattle Seahawks put the Week 1 disappointment behind them by spoiling the Detroit Lions' home opener in an overtime thriller that saw Geno Smith orchestrate the game-winning drive.

The Seattle Seahawks produced a come-from-behind 37-31 overtime win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Sunday to right the wrongs of their Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

After being down 21-10 at the start of the third quarter, Geno Smith and the offense got to work as they scored three touchdowns and a field goal in the second half to send the game into overtime.

It was there that Smith and the offense produced a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a Tyler Lockett touchdown to win the game on the first possession of overtime.

Though it's Lockett that's getting credited for the heroics, Smith's efforts in overtime to secure the win were simply outstanding in the eyes of the veteran receiver.

“I thought he was great,” Lockett said of Smith. “I thought he was everything you want in a leader, that you want in a captain. He was poised, you could tell he was focused, he was going through his reads, he understood when to run, when to attack, he understood. Really thrilled with how he did within our game plan. Overall, it was just great, you know Shane [Waldron coordinator] did a great job of calling plays.”

Pressure was on the Seahawks after they laid a second-half egg against the Rams in Week 1, but they responded.

After an offseason that saw many predicting Seattle to usurp the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West while also being a quiet contender for the Super Bowl, to be shut out in the second half while giving up 23 unanswered points certainly left a sour taste in the mouth of the 12s after Week 1.

Lockett details that the week was a tough one, but it taught his team how to respond and they did just that at Ford Field.

"It was a tough week, just because the loss that we had last week, I think for a lot of people, we were just kind of like, 'Whoa, what happened?'" Lockett said. "We really had to sit down with ourselves—you could say it was a wakeup call—but I think it was one of those things where you're standing and you just get punched, you're just kind of like, 'Whoa, did you punch me?' So we just had to learn how to be able to respond."

Now, after steadying the ship, the team feels like it is back on the right track.

Up next is a date with the Carolina Panthers at Lumen Field on Sunday as the Seahawks will no doubt want to build on what was a confidence-building win over the Lions.
