Seahawks in 'Good Hands' With 'On Fire' Geno Smith, Says Pete Carroll
After a career year last season, Geno Smith is now entering his second campaign as the starter for the Seattle Seahawks.
Smith led the Seahawks to an unlikely 9-8 record and a playoff spot while breaking several franchise records in the process. Smith had career highs in wins (nine), passing yards (4,282), touchdowns (30), and QBR (60.8).
After Seattle hit big with their draft selections, attention now turns to mini camp and training camp, where coach Pete Carroll remains quite happy that Smith is his quarterback.
"He's handled everything so well," Carroll said of Geno Smith on NFL Network. "He's such a great leader. He emerged so quickly on the scene and took hold of it, and had a great season. But more than all of that, it's just his outlook and his perspective that he brings to this team this year now. Man, he's on fire. He's done everything he could possibly do in the offseason, sending the right message, working like crazy, in great shape, and really taking hold of this opportunity.
"We know we are in good hands with G [Smith]."
Seattle had the ninth-ranked offense for points scored per game last season (23.9) as D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards.
After the duo, there was a significant drop (tight end Noah Fant 486 yards).
But …
The addition of receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba gives Smith yet another weapon to utilize and let's not forget UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet, who will be paired with breakout star Kenneth Walker III.
Suddenly, after Smith's Pro Bowl season last year, he has a better offensive group based on expectations.
While it is still early in the offseason, Smith is hitting all the key markers, and Carroll is pleased with the direction his team is going in the post-Russell Wilson era with Smith leading the charge.
