Has Time Come For Seahawks to Shut Down Jamal Adams? - Locked On Podcast

Though Pete Carroll has publicly come to the player's defense as he battles through chronic knee trouble, it may be in the Seattle Seahawks best interest to shelve him for the rest of the season. But will they actually do that? And should they?
In this story:

Still dealing with lingering chronic knee pain from a torn quad tendon suffered last season, Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams sat out Monday's win over the Philadelphia Eagles and per coach Pete Carroll, he wasn't even in attendance for the prime time game at Lumen Field.

While Carroll indicated the idea has been considered with the defender still in "recovery mode," he told reporters on Wednesday that Adams hopes to still be able to play again this year and they are treating his status as day-to-day moving into the final three weeks of the regular season.

“We kind of don’t talk about that, but it’s been something that we have acknowledged and that’s a decision," Carroll responded when asked about the possibility of Adams not playing again this season. "So far, he’s wanted to keep going and driving and see what he can make of it. I just support everything where he’s coming from, in every way. We’ll take it one shot at a time, and we’ll figure it out together.”

Since returning from the PUP list in Week 4, Adams has started nine games for Seattle with mixed results on the field. Statistically, he has produced 48 tackles and seven tackles for loss, continuing to be a factor in the box. But he hasn't registered a sack since the 2020 season and only has two quarterback hits this year, providing minimal impact as a blitzer.

Showing frustrations on and off the field, Jamal Adams has endured a challenging season for Seattle and it's possible his season - as well as tenure with the team - could be over.

In coverage, Adams has been a major liability for the Seahawks, allowing 28 receptions on 34 targets for 292 yards and a pair of touchdowns. This includes a game-winning score allowed to Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson and a 54-yard score to 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel in successive weeks, with the latter miscue drawing rare public ire from Carroll on his weekly radio show.

Given his struggles on and off the field, the chronic knee issues he continues to battle, and the stellar play of Julian Love in his place, with the franchise and player potentially being at an impasse behind the scenes, should the Seahawks shut Adams down for the rest of the season?

Hosts Corbin Smith and Nick Lee discuss the latest on Adams' situation and their read on recent comments from Carroll, delving into what they may mean for the safety's future in the Pacific Northwest in the short and long-term.
