Seahawks LB Jordyn Brooks Enters Contract Year After Team Option Declined

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Jordyn Brooks had his team option declined on Monday, putting the 25-year-old into a contract year in 2023 after tearing his ACL at the end of last season.
In this story:

The Seattle Seahawks have decided to not pick up the fifth-year option for linebacker Jordyn Brooks, per reports Monday from ESPN. He would have been guaranteed under $13 million in the 2024 season if the team decided to pick up the option instead.

After suffering a torn ACL in Week 17 against the New York Jets, Brooks suddenly faced a potential career-altering moment while also being absent for the final game of Seattle’s surprising regular season and eventual playoff appearance. The uncertainty of Brooks’ continued production remains up in the air after his injury, which likely played a role in the Seahawks choosing to not pick his option.

“We are going to count on him to be ready to go, but I am saying that in all optimism because they haven’t gone in and taken a look at what it looks like yet," Carroll said of Brooks in January. "It’s a long recovery, it’s late in the year, it’s a hard race against time for him to make it, but he’s such a well-conditioned guy, he’s such a good worker, his mentality is so strong, so I think he will get as much out of it as he can."

This marks another step in the windy road that one of the league’s most underrated stars has been on since the season ended. He’ll now enter a prove-it year to show the Seahawks that he’s worthy of a new deal despite the injury. It’s a bit odd to say that about a 25-year-old linebacker who finished second in the league in tackles (184) in 2021 while leading the Seahawks in tackles the last two seasons.

But Brooks' previous production won't benefit him now. Once he's ready to get back on the field, he'll need to re-prove himself to the front office.
