Seahawks' Jordyn Brooks 'Really Close,' Jamal Adams Not Far Behind
Only one day after getting cornerback Riq Woolen back on the field, the Seattle Seahawks could have two other star defenders returning in the near future as they approach the finish line recovering from significant injuries.
When asked about the value of walkthrough practices following Sunday's training camp session, coach Pete Carroll provided encouraging updates on linebacker Jordyn Brooks and Jamal Adams unprompted, indicating both defenders continue to make excellent progress. Getting tons of mental work in during walkthroughs while they round back into football shape, he thinks each player could be activated from the PUP list and on the field soon.
“The walkthrough’s are really important," Carroll said. "I can't wait until we get Jordyn [Brooks] back out here, he’s really close. He and Jamal both look really good. They can imagine more football-wise even when they don’t get to practice, by going through those reps. Those are high-quality reps for us. Their assignments are at hand, and the tempo that we maintain to get the reps in there is just really good mental preparation for them."
Based on Carroll's remarks, Brooks appears to be closer to returning than Adams despite being less than eight months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL. If he manages to make it back at some point during training camp and positions himself to be ready to go for the season opener on September 10, it would be a remarkable recovery considering the injury happened in a win over the Jets on New Years Day.
Prior to suffering the injury, Brooks was in the midst of another strong season for the Seahawks and finished with a team-high 161 tackles, five pass breakups and a forced fumble. Since the team declined his fifth-year option in May, he will become an unrestricted free agent in March, but Carroll has previously stated that re-signing him long-term remains a top priority for the organization.
As for Adams, the veteran safety will soon hit 11 months since undergoing surgery to repair a torn quad tendon suffered in Seattle's season opener last September. Like Brooks, he has been running full speed and ramping up his workouts, but due to the nature of his injury that can be difficult to rehab from, the team has been cautious with moving him along too quickly.
Still, Adams appears to also be trending in the right direction to return to action sooner rather than later. With a month until the regular season opener, the Seahawks don't have to rush him back and free agent signee Julian Love will continue to play the strong safety position alongside Quandre Diggs with the first-team defense in his absence.
In additional injury news, Carroll said the Seahawks received "very good news" on rookie running back Kenny McIntosh coming out of Friday's mock game scrimmage. Despite bending his knee awkwardly while being tackled by linebacker Levi Bell, he avoided serious injury and could be back soon.
"He’s got a sprain. It might be a couple weeks," Carroll said. "It looked nasty, but he’s flexible and being the extraordinary athlete that he was he made it through that awkward position that he got in and came out okay. He’s walking around and all that. He’s got a little swelling. We think it’s a first-degree type of sprain so we’re very lucky there."
Along the defensive line, Carroll indicated edge rusher Darrell Taylor has been making good progress recovering from a shoulder sprain and the Seahawks don't think he will be out much longer. Defensive tackle Dre'Mont Jones left practice early on Sunday after banging his toe on the ground, but the coach wasn't able to provide any other information on his status.
