Seahawks 'Surprise Standout': CB Mike Jackson Continues 'Dominant' Offseason
Every NFL season, new players emerge as strong contributors and stars to make a name for themselves. Sometimes, that player comes seemingly out of nowhere... But usually offseason workouts are a good indicator as to how a player is developing,at least in the eyes of the coaching staff.
Seattle Seahawks fifth-year cornerback Mike Jackson, who has largely flown under the radar during his career, caught the attention of coach Pete Carroll this offseason. Carrol said Jackson has had "the best camp of anybody."
Jackson, along with rookies Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant, played a key role in the defense's sudden emergence last season. In 17 starts for Seattle, Jackson finished with 75 tackles, 12 passes defended and an interception.
As a result of this and his play this offseason, ESPN picked Jackson as a surprising standout ahead of training camp:
After a solid showing as a first-year starter in 2022, Jackson seemed destined for a backup role when the Seahawks spent the No. 5 overall pick on Devon Witherspoon. He's making a strong case to remain a regular on defense, however, perhaps as the third corner. With Tariq Woolen sidelined following arthroscopic knee surgery, Jackson has been working with the No. 1 defense and had the best spring of any Seahawk, according to coach Pete Carroll, who called him "almost dominant." -- Brady Henderson
Seattle's secondary has a bounty of riches, including No. 5 overall pick Devon Witherspoon, who has the fourth-best odds to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Seahawks defense hopes to continue its improvement with its new players pushing their starters.
The 25-year-old cornerback Jackson has already shown his determination to get to become a Seahawks starter. Now, will he shine again this season?
