Seahawks Activate TE Noah Fant From PUP List
After missing the first three practices of training camp, fifth-year tight end Noah Fant has passed his physical and will be activated from the PUP list to return to practice for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Fant, who arrived in Seattle as part of the Russell Wilson trade in March 2022, had a cleanup procedure done to fix a knee injury that had bothered him since the end of last season. Though coach Pete Carroll told reporters he was close to being ready after Wednesday's first practice, the team didn't want to force the issue with the veteran, leading to his PUP designation for precautionary reasons to open camp.
"He’s in really good shape. He can run full speed and do all the stuff but we don’t want to push him yet," Carroll said. "Like the other guys, we want to make sure and guarantee that he’s back and fully equipped to take on the load. He was frustrated by not being out but he agreed with being on the PUP just so we can take care of him.”
In his first season with the Seahawks, Fant finished third on the team in receptions (50) and receiving yards (486) behind star receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. He tied a previous career-high with four touchdowns, though his reception and yardage totals were his lowest dating back to his rookie season with the Broncos and he averaged a career-low 9.7 yards per catch.
Known for his receiving talent far more than his blocking coming out of Iowa, however, Fant made notable strides in that aspect of his game in his first year in Seattle. Starting all 17 games, he helped pave the way for rookie running back Ken Walker III to become only the second back in franchise history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards and finish second in Offensive Rookie of the Year balloting.
Returning to the practice field with free agency looming next spring, Fant will compete for snaps against fellow returning veterans Will Dissly and Colby Parkinson. The team also has third-year veteran Tyler Mabry and a pair of undrafted rookies in Noah Gindorff and Griffin Hebert on the roster.
With Fant activated, the Seahawks still have five players on the PUP list, including safety Jamal Adams, linebacker Jordyn Brooks, defensive tackle Bryan Mone, cornerback Riq Woolen, and defensive tackle Austin Faoliu. All five players can be activated to practice at any time.
