Seahawks Offense 'Another Year Wiser' With Geno Smith, Says DK Metcalf

The Seattle Seahawks have retained the majority of their offense from last season, and receiver D.K. Metcalf thinks the unit will be better as a result.

The Seattle Seahawks surprised many last season as quarterback Geno Smith took the franchise to a 9-8 record and a playoff appearance. During that time, the offense was ranked ninth in the NFL for points scored per game (23.9).

Now, with another offseason for the offense to get a higher level of comfort with Shane Waldron's ideas and for Smith to get a full load of reps, receiver D.K. Metcalf thinks that his quarterback’s ability could hav a better Pro Bowl season than last year, but that it comes down to one thing - knowledge.

“Just a whole year of wisdom in this offense," Metcalf said. "Playing with pretty much the same offense that we had last year. You're not going to make some of the same mistakes. I'm not going to make some of the same mistakes I made. Everybody on the offense is just going to be a year wiser, a year older.

"Our communication has gotten a lot better. From Shane (Waldron) to Geno (Smith) from Geno (Smith) to me, me to Shane (Waldron), everybody around the offense just communicates better. So, I think our communication took a step forward. It’s going to help us a lot on the field, and when we go to away games or play at home, or some adversity hits, we're not going to blink, we're just going to keep going.”

With the NFC at its weakest in recent memory and given the additions Seattle has gotten on both sides of the ball, some have Pete Carroll's team winning the NFC West and maybe even making a surprising run for the Super Bowl.

Some might think that is a bridge too far for Seattle this season, but what's a year without goals?

For Metcalf, the expectation heading into the year is to be the best offense in football. With several key additions, he thinks it's entirely plausible.

“I mean, just to be the best in the world," Metcalf said. "That's always everybody's goal at the beginning of the season. Then, we work back from there, but just starting out, just trying to be the best offense, running, passing the ball, being the best efficient offense and just putting up the most points, I think that's the best way I can describe it.

"With the key additions that we had with Jaxon (Smith-Njigba), Zach (Charbonnet), at the end of the day, I think we have that goal to be attained, you know, at the end of the season. So just out there practicing every day going against the defense. You can see that we're going to be an explosive offense. And then the defense is definitely challenging us everyday. We're going to be firing on all cylinders.”

The Seahawks will get the chance to show the NFL world they mean business when they host the Los Angeles Rams at Lumen Field to open up their season on Sunday.

It will be the first time many Seahawks fans will see all the collective weapons converge on the same field, and the expectation is for a win to follow.

Metcalf has high expectations regarding what this offense can be, and to do that, a win against their division rivals would be an ideal start.
