Seahawks’ Pete Carroll: ‘A Lot of Work to Do’ on Defense, Cap Space
The Seattle Seahawks are not satisfied with where they are at yet on defense.
Despite making a few key signings like bringing back veterans like inside linebacker Bobby Wagner and defensive end Jarran Reed, or signing safety Julian Love and linebacker Devin Bush, the Seahawks want more.
"There's a lot of work to do still, we know that," head coach Pete Carroll said during the NFL Owners' Meetings. "We're faced now with different circumstances to deal with, just because we've spent a lot of money already … but we have a lot of work to do. We’ve got a couple of great spots for guys who want to come here.”
The rescinding of the tender on safety Ryan Neal will save the Seahawks a little less than $3 million, which isn't much, albeit it is a move they made in hopes of adding more players.
OverTheCap projects the Seahawks to have around $6 million in cap space available, which may prevent them from doing any major business via free agency.
While Carroll's comments of wanting more on defense is a good sign, the Seahawks went into this offseason with a defensive overhaul in mind. Seattle is still trying to find players that fit inside defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt's 3-4 defense.
"It's definitely coming along," general manager John Schneider added about the Seahawks' defense during the NFL Owners' Meeting. "We definitely need three or four more guys that we need to help out on that side. But the quality of guys we've added, I'm really happy about it."
It is possible that those "three or four more guys" come from the NFL Draft, as the Seahawks are facing some limitations cap-wise. But they do have the ability to create some room via contract restructuring.
According to OverTheCap, around $12 million in space can be freed by restructuring the contracts of safeties Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams while opening up another $5 million by doing the same with Tyler Lockett.
