Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith Trending in Wrong Direction to Play vs. San Francisco 49ers
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is questionable for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium due to a groin injury, but it now appears that he's on the wrong side of questionable.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Seahawks are planning for Smith to be a game-time decision for what the team reportedly views as a "two-week injury."
"Geno Smith is dealing with what is considered a two-week injury to his groin, and as much as the Seahawks QB would like to try to play through it, Seattle is not expected to decide on his availability for Sunday’s game vs. the 49ers until pregame warmups," Schefter tweeted Saturday night.
Per Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Smith picked up the injury on Thursday in practice. He's been dealing with an elbow injury in recent weeks, but hasn't missed a game because of it.
"He just tweaked his groin a little bit yesterday, just kind of stumbled over somebody," Carroll said Friday.
If Smith is unable to go, Drew Lock would make his first start as a Seahawk. He's gotten some minimal action in two games this season when Smith had to be checked out for injury. Lock went a combined 4 of 12 passing for 66 yards and one interception in appearances agaisnt the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams.
Seattle also signed veteran quarterback Sean Mannion to the practice squad on Friday and elevated him to the active roster on Saturday, which was likely a sign that Smith's status could be in jeopardy.
Drew Lock 'Ready As He Can Get' For 49ers
Seahawks fans will certainly be holding their breath as they await Smith's status at kickoff. Seattle (6-6) will need all hands on deck for arguably the toughest test of the season against a Niners (9-3) team that could potentially end the Seahawks' playoff hopes with a win.
Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. PT.
