Quandre Diggs Among 4 Seahawks to Lock Up Salary Guarantees For 2023

With the fifth day of the NFL waiver period officially arriving, the Seattle Seahawks didn't make any moves to avoid contract clauses from triggering for Quandre Diggs and a trio of other veteran players.

Less than a month away from the start of a new league year, several Seattle Seahawks received a happy guaranteed pay day with contract triggers being exercised on the fifth day of the NFL waiver period.

According to OverTheCap.com, safeties Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams, tight end Will Dissly and receiver DK Metcalf each had clauses on their respective contracts vest on Friday, guaranteeing at least a portion of their respective 2023 salaries.

From that group of veterans, Diggs should be the happiest, as his $13.49 million base salary became fully guaranteed for next season. The three-time Pro Bowl defender signed a three-year, $40 million contract to stay in Seattle last March and after a somewhat slow start returning from a broken ankle, he finished second on the team behind only rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen with four interceptions in 2022.

Still recovering from surgery to repair a torn quad tendon that cost him the final 16 games of the 2022 season, $2.56 million of Adams' $11 million base salary became fully guaranteed on Friday. The former All-Pro will be looking to return to form after two injury-marred seasons that ended with major surgeries and could be playing for his future with the Seahawks next season.

Carrying cap hits of $18-plus million and dead cap hits exceeding $20 million apiece for 2023, Diggs and Adams aren't going anywhere and should be cemented in the starting lineup next September.

As for Dissly, the sixth-year veteran tight end's $5.64 million base salary became fully guaranteed on Friday, ensuring he will be on the roster after posting career highs in receptions and receiving yards last season. Ending the season on injured reserve, he's recovering from a fractured upper ankle and it remains to be seen whether or not he will eventually need surgery.

Entering the first year of a three-year, $72 million extension signed during training camp last July, Metcalf's $2.22 million base salary and $12 million option both became fully guaranteed. The star wideout eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for the second time in his career in 2022 while snagging a personal-best 90 receptions from quarterback Geno Smith.

From a roster construction standpoint, Metcalf and Dissly will carry cap hits of $13.72 million and $9.19 million respectively in 2023.

Looking forward on the offseason calendar, the Seahawks will have a decision to make on veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris, who has a $2 million roster bonus due on March 22. With one year remaining on his contract and a $12.211 million cap hit in 2023, the team could save nearly $9 million in cap room by releasing him or lower his cap number through an extension before the new league year begins on March 15.
