The Seattle Seahawks' next coaching search is officially underway, as the team submitted its first round of interview requests on Monday following the departure of Pete Carroll last week.

The first few candidates were largely expected to be in the mix, but the Seahawks threw their first curveball of the search by requesting to interview New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, per ESPN.

Kafka, 36, is an up-and-comer in the NFL coaching ranks. He first broke into the field as an offensive quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, then worked his way up to being the quarterback coach in 2018 and passing game coordinator in 2020.

Kafka then left to join Brian Daboll's staff with the Giants in 2021, and he's been their offensive coordinator ever since.

At first glance, the Giants' offensive stats may not inspire much confidence in Kafka. New York finished the season ranked 30th in points scored, 29th in total yards and 31st in passing yards.

To cut him a bit of slack, though, the Giants dealt with several injuries this season, most notably a torn ACL by starting quarterback Daniel Jones halfway through. Even without the injuries, the Giants don't have the best talent on offense, so it's a bit difficult to judge Kafka's potential as a coach.

Seahawks Should Have Dave Canales Reunion Atop Coaching Options

The Seahawks are the second team to request an interview with Kafka, following the Tennessee Titans. Other coaches Seattle has asked to speak with include Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith.
