Seattle Seahawks Roster Move: Jason Peters to Play vs. Ravens
As expected, with starting right tackle Abraham Lucas still on injured reserve, the Seattle Seahawks promoted veteran Jason Peters from the practice squad for a second straight week to play against the Baltimore Ravens.
The 41-year old Peters signed with Seattle's practice squad shortly after a season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams and due in part to a quad injury, he didn't make his team debut until last week against the Cleveland Browns. Suiting up for the first time with his new team, he rotated in for starter Stone Forsythe on several series and logged 25 total offensive snaps.
While Peters showed some rust in his first game action of his 20th NFL season, including allowing three pressures on 18 pass blocking reps according to Pro Football Focus, he performed well on the Seahawks eventual game-winning drive. Helping keep Myles Garrett and the Browns pass rush away from Geno Smith, the quarterback completed four out of five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown to Jaxon Smith-Njigba to secure the victory in the final minute of regulation.
Set to face another top-five defense in the Ravens on the road, Forsythe likely will receive his third consecutive start opposite of Charles Cross. The third-year blocker has performed admirably since stepping into the lineup for a banged up Jake Curhan, surrendering three pressures and no sacks while delivering several key blocks in the run game over the past two contests.
But as they did a week ago, based on comments from coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks will likely rotate the two tackles over the course of the game. Given his immense experience and wealth of knowledge, Peters gave the team a lift last weekend beyond his contributions in the trenches, as Smith told reporters on Wednesday he provided a "pep talk" for the offense before Smith-Njigba caught the game-clinching touchdown.
"It was great to be able to say I got a chance to play with him," Smith said. "Talk about his resume and what he’s done over his career. What I saw from him is exactly who he’s always been, a Hall of Fame tackle in my opinion. He went out there and went toe-to-toe with Myles Garrett and whoever else they had out there, and he held his own. More than hold his own, he helped us win."
Looking beyond this weekend, the Seahawks will be able to elevate Peters from the practice squad one more time after Sunday before he has to be signed to the 53-man roster in order to suit up again. Depending on Lucas' health and his own performance on Sunday, it's possible a move could be made to permanently add him on the roster in coming weeks as a reliable insurance policy behind Cross and Forsythe.
