Seahawks CB Michael Jackson Creates Problems For Depth Chart

While stars like quarterback Geno Smith, receiver DK Metcalf, and linebacker Bobby Wagner should have their spots locked up, history suggests Seattle won't play any of its starters in the preseason, and that leaves room for new players to make their mark on the roster.

As the Seattle Seahawks find themselves just three days away from the first exhibition game of the season, the team revealed their first unofficial depth chart on Monday.

While stars like quarterback Geno Smith, receiver DK Metcalf, and linebacker Bobby Wagner should have their spots locked up, history suggests Seattle won't play any of its starters in the preseason, and that leaves room for new players to make their mark on the roster.

One of the more overlooked talents on the Seahawks roster is cornerback Michael Jackson, who could be creating a problem with said depth chart. Jackson took over the starting corner role in Seattle in 2022 - his very first season as a starter. That's not a knock on him, however as he spent two seasons in New England playing behind some of the league's best corners.

Jackson discussed his situation with Seattle Sports.

“If you look on a piece of paper it’s like, ‘Ah, we went to New England and it didn’t work out,” Jackson said. “For me, that was the best place I could’ve went. Every day I’m around a Hall of Fame coach in (Bill) Belichick, who knows every possible thing about football. Around (Stephon) Gilmore, that’s 10-plus years. Around Devin McCourty, that’s 10-plus years.

"And Jason McCourty (with 10 years). That’s 30 years of playing, you add another 50 for the coach, and that’s almost 100 years of football and I’m in the room with that every day just learning different tips, keys, fronts, different route combinations, where the quarterback wants to go with the ball.”

Jackson was said to be the best player on the field at minicamp in June, and he's continued to impress into training camp. That's the problem. Seattle has two starting corner positions available, and three players who could potentially take them. Rookie Devin Witherspoon and second-year gem Riq Woolen are also fighting for those two spots.

It's a good problem to have, as Seattle attempts to regain the glory days on defense of the Legion of Boom.
