Seahawks RBs Kenneth Walker III & Zach Charbonnet 'Will Be Battling,' Says Pete Carroll

The Seattle Seahawks used a second-pick to select UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet. Could his role rival that of Kenneth Walker III next season?
In this story:

The Seattle Seahawks have found Kenneth Walker III's foil out of the backfield in UCLA's Zach Charbonnet. Taken in the second round, Charbonnet will be looking to make his mark on Seattle's offense next season.

For coach Pete Carroll, adding another offensive weapon like the former Bruin to complement Walker with his versatility and ability as a pass catcher is something he's looking forward to seeing.

But could there also be a bit of a training camp position battle brewing?

"He's so versatile," Carroll said on Seattle Sports Radio's Bump and Stacy of Charbonnet. "He just will fit in and be a great addition. And really, we're going to find out how far he can take it in terms of the receiving part of it. We know he's really good at it. But so is Kenneth, so those guys will be battling."

Charbonnet comes to the Seahawks off back-to-back 1,000-plus yard and double-digit touchdown seasons. And after being selected in the second round, the pick and production could warrant a starting role.

But while Walker is coming off an outstanding rookie campaign, Carroll and general manager John Schneider could be avoiding outright naming their second-year back the starter just yet in order to keep things competitive. No one's spot is safe after all, though Charbonnet is a proper third-down back who will be used to good effect pass blocking and keeping Geno Smith upright.

For the most part, the Seahawks have been a run-first team under Carroll, and with Walker III and now Charbonnet, that looks set to continue.

Walker III losing his starting job is highly unlikely, but both will be valuable options in  the run and passing game next season as Seattle looks to improve on last year's accomplishments.
