Analyst: Steelers Could Move On From Starting OT
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are believed to be in the hunt for another offensive tackle early in the NFL Draft. After adding Broderick Jones last spring, another first-round addition could be in the works this year, and if it is, that could mark the end for Dan Moore Jr.
During an interview with 93.7 The Fan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo said he believes the Steelers could move on from Moore this year if they're able to add to their offensive tackle room.
"They had to start him as a rookie. He wasn’t very good, got a little bit better each and every year, but he’s still not a guy that I want as my blindside protector," Fittipaldo said. "I think he’s a guy who has the respect of Mike Tomlin and Pat Meyer. I think he’s worked hard to achieve that. But he’s certainly a guy who could be over-recruited, and he’s a guy who could potentially not be on this roster in 2024 if things break a certain way with the draft and how these guys come along."
Moore has started 49 games in three seasons with the Steelers, all coming at left tackle. If the team does add another starter through the NFL Draft, they could look to move Broderick Jones to the left side and solidify their offensive tackle positions for the next few years.
As for their backup swing tackle, second-year player Spencer Anderson could be their go-to. The seventh-round pick impressed during training camp last season and has the ability to play across the offensive line. Then, for their final roster spot, Dylan Cook can continue to develop while sticking around.
"I don’t want to disrespect Dan," Fittipaldo said. "I think he’s worked hard, and he’s gotten better, but he’s definitely someone that they can move on from and improve at that position if they have a chance to, for sure."
If the NFL Draft does fall their way, the Steelers could be targeting names like Amarius Mims of JC Lathem. And an addition of either could be the end for Moore.
