George Pickens Asks Steelers for New Number
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens is lobbying for a number change, asking the team if he could break their rule of not allowing No. 1. The third-year wide receiver took to Instagram to nudge the team.
"C'mon Steelers," Pickens wrote on Instagram with a picture of him wearing a Steelers No. 1 jersey.
The Steelers haven't allowed a player to wear No. 1 since 1999 when Gary Anderson wore it. With the new rules of players being able to wear any number no matter the position, the team prevented certain positions from wearing single digits, and hasn't allowed anyone to wear No. 1.
They started to break that trend this offseason when they gave Patrick Queen No. 6 at inside linebacker. That doesn't mean they'd give Pickens No. 1, but it could mean there's a slightly larger chance than in years past.
Pickens wore No. 1 in college at Georgia but switched to No. 14 in Pittsburgh. It'll be interesting to see if the star wideout changes his number even if he isn't able to have No. 1.
