Brian Flores Ruined Expectations for Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers won't get that lucky again.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have a few openings on their coaching staff, but nothing out of the ordinary from what they usually have going into a season.

After the departures of Brian Flores, John Mitchell and Blaine Stewart, the Steelers are likely going to add to their staff. Team president Art Rooney II said the organization is open to a Flores-like position on offense, or replacing him on defense. But after a year with the former Dolphins' head coach, the expectations for who Pittsburgh hires are a bit too high.

Flores didn't belong in Pittsburgh. After a lawsuit against the NFL, teams seemed to shun the former head coach, and a year off of football appeared to be his best route before trying to return to a coaching staff.

That changed when Mike Tomlin gave Flores a call and discovered that he isn't looking to take time off. Shortly after, the Steelers had a new senior defensive assistant.

Now, everyone is talking about the next Flores-like hire. Who the Steelers will bring in to help the offense in an assistant role, and replace the defensive assistant after he left for Minnesota.

The harsh reality is, though, that the Steelers won't land another Flores. They shouldn't have gotten him in the first place. And the thoughts of bringing in coaches like Eric Bieniemy or Vance Joseph don't make sense because they're real candidates for offensive and defensive coordinator jobs.

Flores wasn't.

There are some realistic names on the market for these roles in Pittsburgh, but they won't be splash hires. The best they might land is a name like Pep Hamilton or Byron Leftwich, but more than likely it doesn't get much bigger than that.

Just because there's not another Flores on the market this offseason doesn't mean a senior assistant won't help the Steelers. Adding more experienced voices to the mix will boost the game plan and the roster.

Flores set the bar way too high. Good for the Steelers and the boost it gave them. But it's not so great for the expectations of their next round of hires.
