Browns QB Named Potential Mitch Trubisky Replacement for Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be looking at another veteran as their backup quarterback.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers don't have the ideal situation at backup quarterback, and for a position they hold value to, they're looking to ensure the best possible choice is behind Kenny Pickett.

While the Steelers would like for their backup quarterback to be Mitch Trubisky, the veteran holds a $10 million cap hit in 2023, and releasing him would save $8 million. Because he's under the final year of his two-year deal, Pittsburgh cannot extend him to spread out the money, but instead, would have to re-sign him for another deal and add void years.

Because of the tricky situation with Trubisky, it feels like a release would be the best option for Pittsburgh. And if they do cut their backup QB, one insider has named former Cleveland Browns passer Jacoby Brissett as a possible replacement.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac writes that the name to watch if the Steelers do cut Trubisky is Brissett due to the Steelers' interest in him last season and his connection with offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

"Brissett is familiar with the Steelers system because he played at North Carolina State (2013-2015) when Matt Canada was the offensive coordinator there," Dulac writes. "Also, Steelers running backs coach Eddie Faulker and receivers coach Frisman Jackson were members of that staff."

Brissett started 11 games last season in place of the suspended Deshaun Watson. During his run with the Browns, he completed 64% of his passes for 2,608 yards and 12 touchdowns to six interceptions. He was 4-7 as Cleveland's starter.

During his four years at N.C. State, Brissett threw for 5,723 yards and 46 touchdowns to 15 interceptions.

While Dulac admits Trubisky would be the easiest backup for the Steelers, his cap hit makes it difficult to believe the team will keep him. And with Mason Rudolph not returning to Pittsburgh this offseason, Brissett will join a list of names that include Josh Dobbs and some NFL Draft prospects as Pickett's backup.
